Introduction

On our perseverance and work in the arts required for the attainment of the goal of our ruler and on the organization of the time devoted to reading, writing and other disciplines. It also contains the great expenses on the part of our benefactor, a number of letters between myself and some of the eminent Frankish personalities with regard to learning and a mention of the arts and the books I have studied in the city of Paris.

From this essay you will understand that the study of the arts is not an easy thing and that those seeking knowledge must defy dangers in order to attain their goal in those countries. As one poet said:

Let me attain the heights that are unattainable

for its ease lies in hardship, and in ease lies hardship

You wish to attain higher things at a cheap price

but before the honey must come the bee sting!

Another one said in an epigram:

He who knows that honey brings him rest

does not fear the pain from the sting of the bee!

Another poet also said:

The virtues have a passion for dangers

so seek the virtues and make your efforts the price

And if the one who loves them shows you the insignificance, then say:

the judgement of destiny lies in the love of the friend
